Class Description

Location: ROOT Hub Campus (at Root & Co Refined Cabinetry Office) Day: Thursdays Time: 4:30–6:00pm Course Length: 8 Weeks Meeting Time:120 Minutes Weekly Recommended Ages: 13–18 (or Whole Family) Course Description: AT THE MOVIES: THE MIND OF MOVIES.FOOD: EXPOSED Eight weeks. Eight unforgettable films. One completely different way of looking at what is on your plate—and what is being fed to your mind. What if class felt like a movie night, an investigation lab, and a powerful conversation all rolled into one? FOOD: EXPOSED is an interactive eight-week movie experience created for teens ages 13–18. Each week, students will watch a carefully selected movie or documentary that pulls back the curtain on the food they eat, the companies producing it, the ingredients hiding inside it, and the marketing shaping their choices. But we will not simply press play. Together, we will investigate labels, challenge advertising claims, uncover hidden ingredients, examine competing viewpoints, ask difficult questions, and compare what we see on the screen with Scripture, reliable evidence, and real life. Along the way, students will develop a genuine appreciation for great documentaries and the powerful stories they preserve, investigate, and reveal. They will also gain wisdom for recognizing satire, understanding what it is really communicating, and discovering why humor can sometimes expose truth in a way straightforward teaching cannot. Most importantly, students will learn that every film is communicating something. Camera angles, music, editing, carefully selected interviews, emotional stories, humor, and even what filmmakers choose not to show can shape what an audience feels and believes. We will examine not only what is being fed to our bodies, but also the messages, assumptions, and worldviews being fed to our minds through the screen. Students will explore questions such as: What is actually inside the foods we eat every day? Why are certain colors, flavors, sweeteners, and preservatives added? Is a product designed to nourish us or simply persuade us to buy more? Who determines what is considered safe? How do farming practices affect our food, bodies, animals, and land? What is the difference between evidence, opinion, testimony, and emotional persuasion? How do music, editing, humor, experts, and statistics influence an audience? What is satire, and what truth is it attempting to reveal? What ideas or worldviews are hidden beneath a film’s entertainment?
